Every Mountain is Different, and Every Experience is Different.

Every time I summit a mountain, I never know what I will take away from that summit. Every mountain is different, and every experience is different.

You never know what a solo trip up to 14,500ft will bring, and I love the challenge of a new adventure (which is also a great metaphor for life).

This one reminded me:

1.) Preparation is everything. When the weather drops to -1 degree Fahrenheit and 35-40mph winds - and you are on the side of bare rock - you will be glad you meticulously prepped your gear.

2.) Embrace the unknown. Big mountains never reveal what they have planned for you until you are deep into the adventure, and it might not be what you expected it to be. Every experience should be appreciated for what it can teach and what you can take away. Adaptability and creativity are critical skills for navigating the unknown.

3.) Accomplishment often requires sacrifice. Getting to the summit might require you to push through exhaustion, climb solo in the dark for hours while others are sleeping, or endure horizontal blowing snow, but the sense of accomplishment will be worth it. I enjoy the sacrifices because I always learn about the depths of my commitment and my ability to persevere.

4.) Never neglect what inspires you. Being freezing cold and alone in the remote wilderness is where I’ve had some of my biggest epiphanies - and I returned home recharged and reconnected.

5.) The mountain doesn’t care. Mountains don’t care how old you are, whether you are exhausted, or whether you are cold: you are the only factor in your success.

These are some of my favorite lessons from altitude. It’s also where I have learned important lessons about my own capabilities. And I wish that for everyone – push yourself out of your comfort area and rise to the challenge of a new adventure. You never know what is waiting for you!
